SUMMARY:Transparent Folded Paper Window Stars
DESCRIPTION:Folded paper stars originated in European folk arts. German educator Fredrich Froebel (1782-1852)\, founder of the idea of kindergarten\, taught young children to make 3-dimensional stars to learn spatial and math concepts. In the Scandinavian countries\, Nordic stars are traditionally hung in windows during the winter solstice season to symbolize hope\, warmth\, and the triumph of light over the long winter nights. Stars folded from transparent paper are often called Waldorf stars because Rudolph Steiner popularized the craft in his educational method to allow children to explore geometry\, color theory\, and the rhythm of the seasons \nThe magic of window stars is that they create complicated figures from simple folds. The class will make one star together\, learning the beginner folds and gluing the star points together. Then you will be able to move forward to more elaborate stars at your own pace. You will go home with a sheaf of patterns and a calm mind. \nAll tools and supplies will be provided. The class registration fee includes\, a $5 fee for materials. \nPlease bring a bag lunch/snack. \nMinimum number of participants: 2 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 72 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 72 hours in advance\, and your registration fee will be refunded. \nInstructor:  Dorothy Smith \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Drypoint and Monotype Printmaking
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Drypoint and Monotype Printmaking\nCreate one-of-a-kind prints while learning how to use an etching press\n\nThis 4-hour workshop will teach you how to combine the expressive lines of a drypoint with the painterly effects of a monotype print to create a series of colorful prints on the etching press. We will begin by scratching our images into clear PETG plastic  printing plates. You will learn how to create expressive marks with a variety of drypoint tools as you trace or draw your design.\n\nAfter inking up your plate\, we’ll demonstrate the proper way to wipe away excess ink to reveal your design. You will then place dampened paper on top of your plate and run it through the etching press to reveal your first print. As you make additional prints\, you’ll learn how to re-apply ink to your plate and adjust the pressure on the press for the best results.\n\nIn the second half of the workshop\, we will use several monotype techniques for adding color to your design. You will get to experiment with rolling on inks\, drawing with water soluble crayons\, using paper masks and more. With each pass through the press\, these different ways of adding color will make each print unique. You will finish with 3-5 prints and get to keep all your printing plates.\n\nBy the end of the workshop\, you will understand the basics of how to make a printing plate\, operate an etching press and be ready to try your own printmaking experiments.\n\nWhat to Bring: Please bring printed (not digital) photos or illustrations up to 5×7 inches in size for tracing onto your printing plate. Choose images that you can outline and shade without too much effort. Remember to reverse any images that include words or scenes that you don’t want to print backwards. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting inky and avoid loose jewelry that could get caught in the press. All other tools and materials\, paper\, printing plates\, and intaglio inks will be provided.\n\nExperience: No prior printmaking or etching press experience needed. Appropriate for teens or adults.\n\nEtching Press Certification:\nFor drypoint and monotype prints\, an etching press is essential. Any class participants interested being certified for independent use of the etching press at the Virginia Book Arts Studio can request to take a short follow-up test to demonstrate their competency on the press. Let this workshop be the start of an ongoing printmaking practice.\n\nThe registration fee includes a $15 fee for materials.\n\nMinimum number of particapants are 2.\n\nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 72 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 72 hours in advance and your registration fee will be refunded.\nInstructor: Liz Schneiders \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sewn Board Binding
DESCRIPTION:Sewn Board Binding is an elegant and contemporary method of binding a book that features a flexible cover\, unattached spine\, and completely flat book opening.  It is constructed with little adhesive and common materials.  Unlike traditional case bound books\, gluing in the text block is easy.  Participants will fold signatures\, use a jig to punch sewing stations\, sew the text block and cover materials together\, and complete the book with spine cloth and decorative paper. The resulting book is useful as a journal and sketchbook and is easily replicated at home in varied sizes and materials. \nMinimum number of participants: 3 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 72 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 72 hours in advance. \nAll materials and tools are provided. Please bring a bag lunch/snack. \nInstructor: Jane Freeman \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pressure Printing with Letterpress
DESCRIPTION:Pressure printing is an experimental\, low relief printing process that utilizes cut paper\, lace\, fabric\, stencils\, plants\, or other collaged materials adhered to a backing sheet to create layered texture and color when run through the press. The layered backing sheet is placed behind the printing paper and run over a type-high\, inked surface\, transferring the image to the press sheet through the pressure applied by the backing sheet. This can be a quick and economical way to get an image onto paper and results in a fuzzy\, atmospheric print. Participants will work individually and collectively to create a variety of stencils to print during the workshop. We will also address how to adjust cylinder packing and form height to achieve the best printed results. \nPlease note: This is an intermediate letterpress printing class. Some previous letterpress experience is required. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring their own fabric\, stencils\, plants\, or other materials to experiment with. All other necessary tools and supplies will be provided. \nMinimum number of participants: 3 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 72 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 72 hours in advance\, and your registration fee will be refunded. \nInstructor: Jen Thomas

SUMMARY:Joomchi & Momagami: Asian Paper Manipulation for Book Arts
DESCRIPTION:Joomchi and Momagami are both a traditional Asian paper craft that creates textured handmade paper using your hands and water. This paper art dates back to the tenth century. (A.D. 918-1392). \nThis processing transforms strong\, long-fibered paper\, such as kozo (mulberry) paper\, into a material with a rich\, leather-like texture. The resulting “kneaded paper” is highly resistant to tearing. Explore ways to manipulate strong Korean mulberry Hanji papers\, as the strength of these papers allows for the creation of felted and leather-like appearances robust enough to support stitches\, inclusions\, and appliqué. \nDuring this hands-on workshop\, we will view examples\, learn about the history\, and get your questions answered. You will also receive guidance on creating and adapting Joomchi to your projects. Consider the possibilities as you explore how the instructor has incorporated these techniques into book arts. \nParticipants are invited to bring threads\, small branches\, leaves\, pressed plants and other thin materials they may want to use for inclusion.  The instructor will have a selection of materials to share. Participants can expect to leave with an assortment of sizes and shapes of completed Joomchi and Momagami papers along with ideas for their uses with their personal book arts projects.  All levels of experience welcome. Please bring a bag lunch. \nMinimum number of participants: 4 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 72 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 72 hours in advance\, and your registration fee will be refunded. \n  \nInstructor:  Catherine Cross Tsintzos \n       \n  \n

SUMMARY:Reductive Color Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:One Block: Many Layers! Reductive Color Woodcut is a technique for creating a multi-layer print using a single block of wood. After each layer is printed\, more of the original block is carved away. In this class\, we’ll dive right in and create a 3 layer reductive cut based on an improvised drawing. No preparation is needed: Our focus is on process and technique. This workshop is a good fit for folks with some experience in relief printmaking (woodcut\, linocut\, rubber block\, etc). \nMinimum number of participants: 3 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 48 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 48 hours in advance. \nThe class fee includes $10 for material costs. \nInstructor:  Barry O’Keefe

SUMMARY:Secret Belgian Binding
DESCRIPTION:Secret Belgian binding (or crisscross binding) features a linear pattern of colored thread crisscrossing over and between the spine and the two covers. This structure holds the cover boards together without glue; signatures are then cleverly stitched into the spine. The result is a sturdy binding which opens completely flat making it perfect for journals\, diaries\, notebooks\, scrapbooks and sketchbooks. Participants will fold signatures and use a jig to create sewing holes. Then\, using fine art paper and book cloth\, participants will cover 3 separate boards (front\, back\, spine)\, sew the boards together\, and sew the signatures into the cover. Participants will learn principles for making the binding in different sizes. \nMinimum number of participants: 3 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 48 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 48 hours in advance. \nAll materials and tools are provided. The class fee includes $15 for material costs. DESCRIPTION:This four day comprehensive bookbinding class introduces the equipment\, tools\, language\, materials\, and skills needed to pursue bookbinding projects independently.  Beginning with simple structures and building toward the complex case bound book\, participants will master the folding\, sewing\, squaring\, cutting\, and binding skills needed to complete a variety of book forms. Participants will master the professional equipment in the studio –  board shear\, nipping press\, paper cutter\, guillotine – leading to certification to use the equipment independently. This class is limited to 4 participants\, which means that each student will receive highly personalized instruction and hands-on attention through out the course. \nAll materials (including book board\, book cloth\, fine art paper\, waxed linen thread\, text paper\, PVA\, methylcellulose) and tools are provided. \nOpen to all; no prior bookbinding experience required. \nEach class runs from 10 am – 4 pm with a 30 minute lunch break (BYO lunch). \nInstructors: Jane Freeman and Yolanda Merrill \nPlease note\, to emphasize the high quality instruction and the personal and intensive nature of this course\, the class-size is limited to 4 participants.  \n  \nClass 1:  Tools\, Materials\, and Processes – Pamphlet and Folded Books in Many Forms \nInstructor:  Jane Freeman \nClass 1 introduces basic bookbinding tools (bone folder\, awl\, punching cradle\, needle\, mat\, exacto knife\, ruler)\, shop equipment (board shear\, paper cutter\, nipping press)\, materials (cover and text paper\, adhesives\, threads)\, processes (cutting\, folding\, basic stitching\, punching\, making jigs\, using adhesives)\, and the vocabulary of bookbinding.  Participants will complete 3 hole pamphlet\, 5 hold pamphlet\, single page folded and accordion books while learning best practices in binding. \nClass 2:  Refining Basic Skills and Developing Craft – Portfolio and Small Book Construction \nInstructor:  Jane Freeman \nClass 2 employs the portfolio structure to build skills of board cutting\, working with cover materials\, and using adhesives.  Using book board\, book cloth\, and decorative paper\, participants will make a 10 x 12 portfolio with tie closure. Participants will then adapt the basic portfolio structure and size to make either a single signature journal or a notepad holder.  Working through the portfolio’s complexity prepares participants for case binding in Classes 3 and 4. \nClass 3:  The Case Bound Book \nInstructor:  Yolanda Merrill \nClass 3 builds on the construction skills mastered in Classes 1 and 2.  Participants work through case bound book processes including folding and sewing a text block with tapes\, constructing a case to fit the text block\, covering the case\, and casing in the text block with end papers.  Participants complete a standard size book using text paper\, end papers\, and book cloth.  Following the completion of the book\, participants plan a case bound project of their choice to practice the process in Class 4. \nClass 4:  Designing and Binding a Case Bound Book \nInstructor:  Yolanda Merrill \nClass 4 engages participants in designing and making a case bound book of their own.  Participants choose landscape/portrait\, dimensions\, text block size\, cover cloth\, and end papers and build their own book from beginning to end.   Participants explore decorative binding options including quarter bound\, half bound\, headbands\, paper binding\, and windows for labels and inlays.  Independence coupled with instructor coaching builds skill and confidence and prepares participants for pursuing binding projects independently. \n  \n     \n
