SUMMARY:Introduction to Letterpress Printing
DESCRIPTION:How on earth did people print things before the invention of the computer? This workshop will cover the mechanics of hand-setting and printing movable type using historic “slow technology” in this one-day introduction to letterpress printing. We’ll cover type setting\, lock-up\, proofing\, printing\, and cleaning a Vandercook Universal cylindrical printing press\, along with general letterpress best practices. Bring a brief piece of writing—haiku\, quote\, proverb\, etc.—to set and print during the workshop. We’ll be getting inky and working on our feet for duration of the workshop\, so wear clothing you don’t mind getting dirty\, along with comfortable\, close-toed shoes. SUMMARY:Joomchi & Momagami: Asian Paper Manipulation for Book Arts
DESCRIPTION:Joomchi and Momagami are both a traditional Asian paper craft that creates textured handmade paper using your hands and water. This paper art dates back to the tenth century. (A.D. 918-1392). \nThis processing transforms strong\, long-fibered paper\, such as kozo (mulberry) paper\, into a material with a rich\, leather-like texture. The resulting “kneaded paper” is highly resistant to tearing. Explore ways to manipulate strong Korean mulberry Hanji papers\, as the strength of these papers allows for the creation of felted and leather-like appearances robust enough to support stitches\, inclusions\, and appliqué. \nDuring this hands-on workshop\, we will view examples\, learn about the history\, and get your questions answered. You will also receive guidance on creating and adapting Joomchi to your projects. Consider the possibilities as you explore how the instructor has incorporated these techniques into book arts. \nParticipants are invited to bring threads\, small branches\, leaves\, pressed plants and other thin materials they may want to use for inclusion.  The instructor will have a selection of materials to share. Participants can expect to leave with an assortment of sizes and shapes of completed Joomchi and Momagami papers along with ideas for their uses with their personal book arts projects.  All levels of experience welcome. DESCRIPTION:Originally called peepshow books\, tunnel books are dimensional books that emerged in 15th century Europe to illustrate the mechanics of vision and have evolved into picture books that function as miniature stages\, creating theater-like scenes when fully extended. SUMMARY:Pressure Printing with Letterpress
DESCRIPTION:Pressure printing is an experimental\, low relief printing process that utilizes cut paper\, lace\, fabric\, stencils\, plants\, or other collaged materials adhered to a backing sheet to create layered texture and color when run through the press. The layered backing sheet is placed behind the printing paper and run over a type-high\, inked surface\, transferring the image to the press sheet through the pressure applied by the backing sheet. This can be a quick and economical way to get an image onto paper and results in a fuzzy\, atmospheric print. Participants will work individually and collectively to create a variety of stencils to print during the workshop. We will also address how to adjust cylinder packing and form height to achieve the best printed results. \nPlease note: This is an intermediate letterpress printing class. Some previous letterpress experience is required. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring their own fabric\, stencils\, plants\, or other materials to experiment with. This class will give you a taste of that fascinating art form known as letterpress printing. \nOver the course of 3 hours\, I will take you through the history and modern resurgence of letterpress. Most importantly we will experience together how it can be a source of joy for the collector\, hobby printer\, and aspiring artist. We will focus mainly on printing with supplies you can purchase for your home like the Provisional Press and introduce you to the possibilities of the historic wood type library found at Virginia Book Arts. In this class\, you will witness a demo of the Vandercook Universal 1 press and come away with two copies of a letterpress poster that you printed yourself! \nPrerequisites \nThere are no prerequisites—only a desire to be curious and learn together. DESCRIPTION:Sewn Board Binding is an elegant and contemporary method of binding a book that features a flexible cover\, unattached spine\, and completely flat book opening.  It is constructed with little adhesive and common materials.  Unlike traditional case bound books\, gluing in the text block is easy.  Participants will fold signatures\, use a jig to punch sewing stations\, sew the text block and cover materials together\, and complete the book with spine cloth and decorative paper. SUMMARY:Introduction to Drypoint and Monotype Printmaking
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Drypoint and Monotype Printmaking\nCreate one-of-a-kind prints while learning how to use an etching press\n\nThis 4-hour workshop will teach you how to combine the expressive lines of a drypoint with the painterly effects of a monotype print to create a series of colorful prints on the etching press. We will begin by scratching our images into clear PETG plastic  printing plates. You will learn how to create expressive marks with a variety of drypoint tools as you trace or draw your design.\n\nAfter inking up your plate\, we’ll demonstrate the proper way to wipe away excess ink to reveal your design. You will then place dampened paper on top of your plate and run it through the etching press to reveal your first print. As you make additional prints\, you’ll learn how to re-apply ink to your plate and adjust the pressure on the press for the best results.\n\nIn the second half of the workshop\, we will use several monotype techniques for adding color to your design. You will get to experiment with rolling on inks\, drawing with water soluble crayons\, using paper masks and more. With each pass through the press\, these different ways of adding color will make each print unique. You will finish with 3-5 prints and get to keep all your printing plates.\n\nBy the end of the workshop\, you will understand the basics of how to make a printing plate\, operate an etching press and be ready to try your own printmaking experiments.\n\nWhat to Bring: Please bring printed (not digital) photos or illustrations up to 5×7 inches in size for tracing onto your printing plate. Choose images that you can outline and shade without too much effort. Remember to reverse any images that include words or scenes that you don’t want to print backwards. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting inky and avoid loose jewelry that could get caught in the press. All other tools and materials\, paper\, printing plates\, and intaglio inks will be provided.\n\nExperience: No prior printmaking or etching press experience needed. SUMMARY:Transparent Folded Paper Window Stars
DESCRIPTION:Folded paper stars originated in European folk arts. German educator Fredrich Froebel (1782-1852)\, founder of the idea of kindergarten\, taught young children to make 3-dimensional stars to learn spatial and math concepts. In the Scandinavian countries\, Nordic stars are traditionally hung in windows during the winter solstice season to symbolize hope\, warmth\, and the triumph of light over the long winter nights. Stars folded from transparent paper are often called Waldorf stars because Rudolph Steiner popularized the craft in his educational method to allow children to explore geometry\, color theory\, and the rhythm of the seasons \nThe magic of window stars is that they create complicated figures from simple folds. The class will make one star together\, learning the beginner folds and gluing the star points together. Then you will be able to move forward to more elaborate stars at your own pace. You will go home with a sheaf of patterns and a calm mind. \nAll tools and supplies will be provided. SUMMARY:Welcome to Book Arts
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Bookbinding & Letterpress Materials\, Tools & Techniques \nThis free\, hands-on class provides an introduction to letterpress basics and bookbinding. Participants will learn about locking up a form on the press bed\, inking the press and “pressure” considerations in order to then pull several prints. Other aspects of letterpress printing will be reviewed\, such as metal and wood type\, how type drawers are organized\, and setting type and spacing material in a composition stick. The bookbinding portion of the class covers paper grain\, folding\, scoring\, and how to use a bone folder\, utility knife and awl. Participants will bring home a simple pamphlet-stitched booklet of their making as well as several single-sheet zine models. All tools and materials will be provided. \nVBA is committed to the accessibility of this historic resource and offers this workshop for free. However\, registration is required. Registration is a commitment to attend the class so that the instructor can prepare the necessary materials. We will send out a reminder before the class date.
