SUMMARY:Collaborate on A Folio of Poetry Broadsides
DESCRIPTION:In this special two-day workshop\, a small cohort of six collaborators will create a folio of original letterpress poetry broadsides—each pairing a poem with a hand-carved illustration. \nConstraints in design guidelines for scale\, method\, and color gradients will make the collection harmonious while highlighting our individual creativity and poem selections. Before the workshop\, you’ll select your poem and image; we’ll prepare polymer plates for the text and scale your image for transfer. During the workshop\, you’ll carve your illustration\, hand-set your title using lead or wood type\, and print your edition on the Vandercook press. \nEach participant will print at least eight copies of their broadside. At the end of the weekend\, we’ll collate and exchange work so that everyone leaves with a complete folio featuring a full set of the group’s broadsides. \nGet your hands on this historical practice of illustrating\, printing\, and sharing our most beloved poems. \nDay 1 (Saturday): Image transfer\, carving\, and finalizing layout and design\nDay 2 (Sunday): Printing on the Vandercook press\, and folio collation \nAll materials provided\, including a custom made VBA folder for taking home your collection. \nPlease note: This workshop is open to participants who have completed at least one prior class at Virginia Book Arts using the Vandercook press. \nThere will be occasions for meetings at the station before the weekend of the class for planning purposes\, but attending these will not be required to participate. \nThe workshop will run from 10 am to 4 pm each day. The class fee includes $50 for material costs. \nMinimum number of participants: 3 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 48 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 48 hours in advance. \nInstructor:  Jenny Mikulski \n  \nCourtesy The Boutelle-Day Poetry Center at Smith College\n

SUMMARY:Joomchi & Momagami: Asian Paper Manipulation for Book Arts
DESCRIPTION:Joomchi and Momagami are both a traditional Asian paper craft that creates textured handmade paper using your hands and water. This paper art dates back to the tenth century. (A.D. 918-1392). \nThis processing transforms strong\, long-fibered paper\, such as kozo (mulberry) paper\, into a material with a rich\, leather-like texture. The resulting “kneaded paper” is highly resistant to tearing. Explore ways to manipulate strong Korean mulberry Hanji papers\, as the strength of these papers allows for the creation of felted and leather-like appearances robust enough to support stitches\, inclusions\, and appliqué. \nDuring this hands-on workshop\, we will view examples\, learn about the history\, and get your questions answered. You will also receive guidance on creating and adapting Joomchi to your projects. Consider the possibilities as you explore how the instructor has incorporated these techniques into book arts. \nParticipants are invited to bring threads\, small branches\, leaves\, pressed plants and other thin materials they may want to use for inclusion.  The instructor will have a selection of materials to share. Participants can expect to leave with an assortment of sizes and shapes of completed Joomchi and Momagami papers along with ideas for their uses with their personal book arts projects.  All levels of experience welcome. \nMinimum number of participants: 4 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 48 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 48 hours in advance. \nAll other materials and supplies are provided. Please bring a bag lunch. \nInstructor:  Catherine Cross Tsintzos \n       \n  \n

SUMMARY:Secret Belgian Binding
DESCRIPTION:Secret Belgian binding (or crisscross binding) features a linear pattern of colored thread crisscrossing over and between the spine and the two covers. This structure holds the cover boards together without glue; signatures are then cleverly stitched into the spine. The result is a sturdy binding which opens completely flat making it perfect for journals\, diaries\, notebooks\, scrapbooks and sketchbooks. Participants will fold signatures and use a jig to create sewing holes. Then\, using fine art paper and book cloth\, participants will cover 3 separate boards (front\, back\, spine)\, sew the boards together\, and sew the signatures into the cover. Participants will learn principles for making the binding in different sizes. \nMinimum number of participants: 3 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 48 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 48 hours in advance. \nAll materials and tools are provided. The class fee includes $15 for material costs. Please bring a bag lunch/snack. \nInstructor: Jane Freeman \n

SUMMARY:Reductive Color Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:One Block: Many Layers! Reductive Color Woodcut is a technique for creating a multi-layer print using a single block of wood. After each layer is printed\, more of the original block is carved away. In this class\, we’ll dive right in and create a 3 layer reductive cut based on an improvised drawing. No preparation is needed: Our focus is on process and technique. This workshop is a good fit for folks with some experience in relief printmaking (woodcut\, linocut\, rubber block\, etc). \nMinimum number of participants: 3 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 48 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 48 hours in advance. \nThe class fee includes $10 for material costs. \nInstructor:  Barry O’Keefe
