SUMMARY:Welcome to Book Arts
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Bookbinding & Letterpress Materials\, Tools & Techniques \nThis free\, hands-on class provides an introduction to letterpress basics and bookbinding. Participants will learn about locking up a form on the press bed\, inking the press and “pressure” considerations in order to then pull several prints. Other aspects of letterpress printing will be reviewed\, such as metal and wood type\, how type drawers are organized\, and setting type and spacing material in a composition stick. The bookbinding portion of the class covers paper grain\, folding\, scoring\, and how to use a bone folder\, utility knife and awl. Participants will bring home a simple pamphlet-stitched booklet of their making as well as several single-sheet zine models. All tools and materials will be provided. \nVBA is committed to the accessibility of this historic resource and offers this workshop for free. However\, registration is required. Registration is a commitment to attend the class so that the instructor can prepare the necessary materials. We will send out a reminder before the class date. Please note that we often have a waiting list for this class so it is important to let us know if you need to cancel! \nInstructor: Lyall Harris \nFree\, registration required. \n

SUMMARY:Letterpress & Lino: A Broadside in a Day
DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Printing with Type and Linocuts on the Vandercook \n\nNineteenth‑century illustrated newspapers were masters of rapid\, collective image‑making. Artists sketched directly across several wood blocks locked together; then the blocks were separated and handed to different engravers\, each cutting their portion of a much larger image. When reassembled on press\, the picture printed as one dramatic\, unified portrait or scene. \n\n\nIn this one‑day workshop\, we’ll channel that fast\, collaborative spirit and work as a team in our shop. Team members will carve linoleum blocks and hand‑set type (image and text pre-selected) in rotating roles throughout the day. By late afternoon\, we’ll bring everything together on a vintage Vandercook proof press to print an edition of bold\, expressive broadsides. \n\nNo experience needed. Just curiosity\, teamwork\, and a desire to make something together start-to-finish using an array of new skills.\nAll materials provided. Bring a bag lunch.\nInstructors: Bonnie Bernstein and Jenny Mikulski \n  \n
