SUMMARY:Introduction to Typesetting with Moveable Type
DESCRIPTION:Get your hands dirty in the largest collection of moveable type in the mid-Atlantic! Have you always wondered where the phrase “out of sorts” came from? You’ll know\, once you’ve learned a little typesetting using Virginia Book Arts massive collection of lead type. Participants will get an introduction to type and the elements of setting lines of text. We’ll then dive into collaboratively typesetting a short poem to letterpress print on the Vandercook. This workshop will primarily focus on lead type\, typesetting\, locking up\, and proofing (we won’t dive into type history or the nuances of the Vandercook). DESCRIPTION:Using book board\, decorative paper\, and book cloth\, participants will learn basic box construction and make a 5 x 7 hinged lid box.  This durable and sturdy construction both sits on its base and stands upright on a bookshelf; it is perfect for housing mementos\, jewelry\, ephemera\, and more.  Participants will explore options for decorating the box and learn how to calculate measurements to make custom size boxes. \nAll materials and tools are provided. The class fee includes $20 for material costs. In this hands-on\, four-hour beginner workshop\, you’ll experience the full process of relief printmaking—from first impression to finished print—all in one day. \nWe’ll jump right in by printing from a selection of pre-carved blocks\, both by hand and on a press\, so you can immediately see what’s possible. Then you’ll create your own print from start to finish: choose from a range of classic linocut designs\, transfer your image\, carve your block\, ink it\, and pull your own prints—all in a single afternoon. \nYou’ll leave with a small edition of your own handmade prints\, plus a simple materials shopping list to help you continue at home. \nAlong the way\, you’ll explore a curated selection of prints\, books\, and examples from the rich history of relief printing\, including an introduction to some of today’s most exciting linocut artists—both in Virginia and around the world. \nCome get your hands in ink and discover why linocut is such a satisfying\, and therapeutic art practice. SUMMARY:Memento Fabric Book
DESCRIPTION:In this two day class we will create a soft fabric book filled with meaning and intention\, inspired by our own collection of fabric pieces. \nWe will create the folios from simple layered and stitched fabric collages. In the process we will explore different hand sewing and embroidery techniques\, and we will discuss different ways to stabilize the pages and the book cover for added structure and rigidity. We will also learn different ways to edge the fabric pages and how to create a variety of closures. \nYou are encouraged to bring small amounts of fabric that has personal meaning\, such as pieces of lace\, vintage napkins\, clothing remnants etc. The course-provided materials include base fabric\, stabilizers\, interfacing\, book binding thread\, and embroidery thread. The workshop fee includes $15 for material costs. \nThe class will run from 10 am to 4 pm both days. Tools and supplies will be provided.
