SUMMARY:From Concept to Object: The Whats and Hows of Book Art
DESCRIPTION:From Concept to Object: The Whats and Hows of Book Art\nIn two 2-hour sessions\, this class will introduce participants to the field of Book Art. In the first session we will examine a variety of examples of books\, taking a deep-dive into this art form and exploring what it means for a book to be called “book art.” Prompts will be given to prepare for session 2 where we will share project ideas and how these could be realized in book art.\n\nPlease note: This class runs 2 evenings; Nov 4 & 11\, 5:30-7:30pm\n\n\nMinimum number of participants: 3\n\nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 72 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 72 hours in advance and your registration fee will be refunded.\nInstructors:  Kristin Adolfson and Lyall Harris \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pressure Printing with Letterpress
DESCRIPTION:Pressure printing is an experimental\, low relief printing process that utilizes cut paper\, lace\, fabric\, stencils\, plants\, or other collaged materials adhered to a backing sheet to create layered texture and color when run through the press. The layered backing sheet is placed behind the printing paper and run over a type-high\, inked surface\, transferring the image to the press sheet through the pressure applied by the backing sheet. This can be a quick and economical way to get an image onto paper and results in a fuzzy\, atmospheric print. Participants will work individually and collectively to create a variety of stencils to print during the workshop. We will also address how to adjust cylinder packing and form height to achieve the best printed results. \nPlease note: This is an intermediate letterpress printing class. Some previous letterpress experience is required. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring their own fabric\, stencils\, plants\, or other materials to experiment with. All other necessary tools and supplies will be provided. \nMinimum number of participants: 3 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 72 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 72 hours in advance\, and your registration fee will be refunded. \nInstructor: Jen Thomas

SUMMARY:Welcome to Book Arts
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Bookbinding & Letterpress Materials\, Tools & Techniques \nThis free\, hands-on class provides an introduction to letterpress basics and bookbinding. Participants will learn about locking up a form on the press bed\, inking the press and “pressure” considerations in order to then pull several prints. Other aspects of letterpress printing will be reviewed\, such as metal and wood type\, how type drawers are organized\, and setting type and spacing material in a composition stick. The bookbinding portion of the class covers paper grain\, folding\, scoring\, and how to use a bone folder\, utility knife and awl. Participants will bring home a simple pamphlet-stitched booklet of their making as well as several single-sheet zine models. All tools and materials will be provided. \nVBA is committed to the accessibility of this historic resource and offers this workshop for free. However\, registration is required. Registration is a commitment to attend the class so that the instructor can prepare the necessary materials. We will send out a reminder before the class date. Please note that we often have a waiting list for this class so it is important to let us know if you need to cancel! \nInstructor: Lyall Harris \nFree\, registration required. \n  \n

SUMMARY:This ain’t AI: It’s Letterpress
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how people make those cool looking cards\, posters\, and calendars at your favorite gift shop? You know the kind\, where you can feel the design with your hands\, where the type is actually pressed into the paper. This class will give you a taste of that fascinating art form known as letterpress printing. \nOver the course of 3 hours\, I will take you through the history and modern resurgence of letterpress. Most importantly we will experience together how it can be a source of joy for the collector\, hobby printer\, and aspiring artist. We will focus mainly on printing with supplies you can purchase for your home like the Provisional Press and introduce you to the possibilities of the historic wood type library found at Virginia Book Arts. In this class\, you will witness a demo of the Vandercook Universal 1 press and come away with two copies of a letterpress poster that you printed yourself! \nPrerequisites \nThere are no prerequisites—only a desire to be curious and learn together. We welcome your accessibility questions! \nWho should take this class? \nTeachers\, designers\, artists\, librarians\, historians\, or humans who wants to learn more about the power of hand crafting multiples. Ages 13 and up\, and please reach out directly if you would like a child under 12 to accompany you (cost is per person). \nMinimum number of participants: 4 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 72 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 72 hours in advance\, and your registration fee will be refunded. \nInstructor: Holly Odom \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sewn Board Binding
DESCRIPTION:Sewn Board Binding is an elegant and contemporary method of binding a book that features a flexible cover\, unattached spine\, and completely flat book opening.  It is constructed with little adhesive and common materials.  Unlike traditional case bound books\, gluing in the text block is easy.  Participants will fold signatures\, use a jig to punch sewing stations\, sew the text block and cover materials together\, and complete the book with spine cloth and decorative paper. The resulting book is useful as a journal and sketchbook and is easily replicated at home in varied sizes and materials. \nMinimum number of participants: 3 \nIf minimum enrollment for the class has not been reached 72 hours prior to the start of class\, VBA reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case\, you will be notified 72 hours in advance. \nAll materials and tools are provided. Please bring a bag lunch/snack. \nInstructor: Jane Freeman \n  \n
