SUMMARY:Core Skills Binding (4 part series)
DESCRIPTION:This four day comprehensive bookbinding class introduces the equipment\, tools\, language\, materials\, and skills needed to pursue bookbinding projects independently.  Beginning with simple structures and building toward the complex case bound book\, participants will master the folding\, sewing\, squaring\, cutting\, and binding skills needed to complete a variety of book forms. Participants will master the professional equipment in the studio –  board shear\, nipping press\, paper cutter\, guillotine – leading to certification to use the equipment independently. This class is limited to 4 participants\, which means that each student will receive highly personalized instruction and hands-on attention through out the course. \nAll materials (including book board\, book cloth\, fine art paper\, waxed linen thread\, text paper\, PVA\, methylcellulose) and tools are provided. \nOpen to all; no prior bookbinding experience required. \nEach class runs from 10 am – 4 pm with a 30 minute lunch break (BYO lunch). \nInstructors: Jane Freeman and Yolanda Merrill \nPlease note\, to emphasize the high quality instruction and the personal and intensive nature of this course\, the class-size is limited to 4 participants.  \n  \nClass 1:  Tools\, Materials\, and Processes – Pamphlet and Folded Books in Many Forms \nInstructor:  Jane Freeman \nClass 1 introduces basic bookbinding tools (bone folder\, awl\, punching cradle\, needle\, mat\, exacto knife\, ruler)\, shop equipment (board shear\, paper cutter\, nipping press)\, materials (cover and text paper\, adhesives\, threads)\, processes (cutting\, folding\, basic stitching\, punching\, making jigs\, using adhesives)\, and the vocabulary of bookbinding.  Participants will complete 3 hole pamphlet\, 5 hold pamphlet\, single page folded and accordion books while learning best practices in binding. \nClass 2:  Refining Basic Skills and Developing Craft – Portfolio and Small Book Construction \nInstructor:  Jane Freeman \nClass 2 employs the portfolio structure to build skills of board cutting\, working with cover materials\, and using adhesives.  Using book board\, book cloth\, and decorative paper\, participants will make a 10 x 12 portfolio with tie closure. Participants will then adapt the basic portfolio structure and size to make either a single signature journal or a notepad holder.  Working through the portfolio’s complexity prepares participants for case binding in Classes 3 and 4. \nClass 3:  The Case Bound Book \nInstructor:  Yolanda Merrill \nClass 3 builds on the construction skills mastered in Classes 1 and 2.  Participants work through case bound book processes including folding and sewing a text block with tapes\, constructing a case to fit the text block\, covering the case\, and casing in the text block with end papers.  Participants complete a standard size book using text paper\, end papers\, and book cloth.  Following the completion of the book\, participants plan a case bound project of their choice to practice the process in Class 4. \nClass 4:  Designing and Binding a Case Bound Book \nInstructor:  Yolanda Merrill \nClass 4 engages participants in designing and making a case bound book of their own.  Participants choose landscape/portrait\, dimensions\, text block size\, cover cloth\, and end papers and build their own book from beginning to end.   Participants explore decorative binding options including quarter bound\, half bound\, headbands\, paper binding\, and windows for labels and inlays.  Independence coupled with instructor coaching builds skill and confidence and prepares participants for pursuing binding projects independently. \n  \n     \n

SUMMARY:Beginning Printmaking with Recycled Tetra Pak
DESCRIPTION:Learn to make prints on a craft press using recycled food packaging. \nIn this 3-hour beginner-friendly workshop we will create easy and expressive art prints using recycled Tetra Pak as our printing plates. What in the world is Tetra Pak? It’s the food packaging material used to make cartons for broth\, oat milk\, soups and more. Come see why printing with Tetra Pak has become such a popular form of printmaking. Each student will learn how to “draw” designs onto their plates then hand print them on a portable craft press using non-toxic inks. The results can be surprisingly magical! Each student will take home 2-3 completed prints. \n\nTurn recycled Tetra Pak boxes into fast and fun printing plates.\nLearn all the basics of how to properly prepare the paper\, mark and ink up the plates\, align the plate correctly and print on a portable press.\nLearn tips for creating more complex prints by using different plate wiping techniques\, adding spot color\, and layering multiple plates.\n\nAdditional workshop details \n\nMaterials and tools: All materials are provided with tools available for in-class use.\nCourse-provided materials include recycled food packaging (Tetra Pak)\, printmaking inks\, watercolor paper for up to 4 prints/cards\, and supplies for inking and wiping the printing plates.\nBasic tools such as etching needles\, X-acto knives\, scissors\, craft knives\, cutting mats\, and a Sizzix Big Shot Plus die-cutting machine as a printing press will be available for in-class use.\nParticipants are welcome to bring images up to 4×6 in. in size for use as inspiration.\nWear an apron or old clothes that you don’t mind getting inky.\n\nOpen to all skill levels. No prior printing experience required. Tools and materials will be provided. \nInstructor: Liz Schneiders \n

SUMMARY:Welcome to Book Arts
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Bookbinding & Letterpress Materials\, Tools & Techniques \nThis free\, hands-on class provides an introduction to letterpress basics and bookbinding. Participants will learn about locking up a form on the press bed\, inking the press and “pressure” considerations in order to then pull several prints. Other aspects of letterpress printing will be reviewed\, such as metal and wood type\, how type drawers are organized\, and setting type and spacing material in a composition stick. The bookbinding portion of the class covers paper grain\, folding\, scoring\, and how to use a bone folder\, utility knife and awl. Participants will bring home a simple pamphlet-stitched booklet of their making as well as several single-sheet zine models. All tools and materials will be provided. \nVBA is committed to the accessibility of this historic resource and offers this workshop for free. However\, registration is required. Registration is a commitment to attend the class so that the instructor can prepare the necessary materials. We will send out a reminder before the class date. Please note that we often have a waiting list for this class so it is important to let us know if you need to cancel! \nInstructor: Lyall Harris \nFree\, registration required. \n

SUMMARY:Leather Journal with Wrap Closure
DESCRIPTION:Elements of making a leather bound journal are similar to making a case bound book yet there are special tools and opportunities with leather…  and the casing is a little more forgiving than board binding!  Participants will sew a multi-signature\, torn edge text block and glue that block into a leather wrap cover.  Several closures styles are possible with this structure as are some decorative elements for the journal. \nOpen to all skill levels. No prior bookbinding experience required. All necessary tools and materials will be provided. Please bring a bag lunch. \nInstructor: Jane Freeman \n
