Create • Collaborate • Teach • Preserve
Virginia Book Arts is a thriving community of letterpress printers, bookbinders, printmakers, and paper artists based in Charlottesville, Virginia. We seek to preserve the history and craft of the book.

Our Current Challenge
In early 2025, significant NEH funding was cut from Virginia Humanities (VH) of which our organization was a program. Although we are fortunate to receive a small annual grant from VH, we are now responsible for our rent and operating expenses.
Now, more than ever, we need your financial support as we launch a campaign to help fund the next three years. Help us keep the presses rolling!
What We Do
Bookmaking, printmaking, and related craft.

Working individually or collaboratively, our members and participants design, print, and bind or assemble hand-made artists’ books, ranging from traditional bound books to one-of-a-kind structures.
Teaching and learning.

Book arts instructors include members and guest artists who lead classes and workshops in old and new methods.
Collaborating, mentoring, and hosting open studios.

At its heart, Virginia Book Arts exists to foster a community of artists who can work with, be inspired by, and learn from each other.
Bringing book arts into the community.

Member artists frequently offer studio programs that involve temporary loans of portable bookmaking equipment at other venues, including schools and libraries.
