Introduction to Drypoint and Monotype Printmaking

Create one-of-a-kind prints while learning how to use an etching press

This 4-hour workshop will teach you how to combine the expressive lines of a drypoint with the painterly effects of a monotype print to create a series of colorful prints on the etching press. We will begin by scratching our images into clear PETG plastic  printing plates. You will learn how to create expressive marks with a variety of drypoint tools as you trace or draw your design.

After inking up your plate, we’ll demonstrate the proper way to wipe away excess ink to reveal your design. You will then place dampened paper on top of your plate and run it through the etching press to reveal your first print. As you make additional prints, you’ll learn how to re-apply ink to your plate and adjust the pressure on the press for the best results.

In the second half of the workshop, we will use several monotype techniques for adding color to your design. You will get to experiment with rolling on inks, drawing with water soluble crayons, using paper masks and more. With each pass through the press, these different ways of adding color will make each print unique. You will finish with 3-5 prints and get to keep all your printing plates.

By the end of the workshop, you will understand the basics of how to make a printing plate, operate an etching press and be ready to try your own printmaking experiments.

What to Bring: Please bring printed (not digital) photos or illustrations up to 5×7 inches in size for tracing onto your printing plate. Choose images that you can outline and shade without too much effort. Remember to reverse any images that include words or scenes that you don’t want to print backwards. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting inky and avoid loose jewelry that could get caught in the press. All other tools and materials, paper, printing plates, and intaglio inks will be provided.

Experience: No prior printmaking or etching press experience needed. Appropriate for teens or adults.

For drypoint and monotype prints, an etching press is essential. Any class participants interested being certified for independent use of the etching press at the Virginia Book Arts Studio can request to take a short follow-up test to demonstrate their competency on the press. Let this workshop be the start of an ongoing printmaking practice.

The registration fee includes a $15 fee for materials.
